Dating back to the early nineteenth century, afternoon tea is once again a very fashionable way to indulge in a little bit of British tradition. With seats available on the newly restored buffet car dating back to the 1960s, afternoon tea behind a lovingly-restored steam locomotive is the perfect way to celebrate a special event such as a birthday or anniversary or as an occasional indulgence to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon.
Afternoon Tea on a steam train is only one part of the new Something for Sunday programme being run by the visitor attraction which welcomes over 65,000 visitors a year aboard its nostalgic trains and through the doors of Scotland’s largest railway museum. A selection of tours & encounters which run alongside the standard timetable is available most Sundays. So far visitors have enjoyed a visit to a footplate of a locomotive in ‘light steam’ and a behind the scenes tour of the Model Railway. Much more is in store, ranging from Signal Box Tours to visits to the Modern Motive Power Department where visitors will enjoy a look at how a heritage diesel locomotive is restored.
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society, who operate the Museum and railway, were recently awarded the Heritage Railway Association’s Peter Manisty Award for Excellence which has previously been given to the reconstructed St Pancras Station and the newly constructed main line steam locomotive ‘Tornado’ so they have much to show to visitors.
