A major new force burst on to Scotland's cultural landscape yesterday with the launch of a federation to promote a sustainable and growing future for the industrial heritage sector.
Industrial Museums Scotland is led by the Scottish Mining Museum, Scottish Maritime Museum and Scottish Fisheries Museum - who will now receive direct funding from the Scottish Government. In return, we have agreed to join forces in co-operation with other industrial independent accredited museums to forge benefits for the sector as a whole. It follows the outcome of the Scottish Museums Think Tank which culminated in an announcement in December 2010.
Trustees from the eight industrial museums signed a Memorandum of Understanding yesterday at the Scottish Railway Preservation Society at Bo'ness. This event marked the formation of the federation, which will operate under the heading Industrial Museums Scotland.
The eight Museums are Almond Valley Heritage Trust, Dundee Heritage Trust, the Museum of Lead Mining, the Scottish Fisheries Museum, the Scottish Maritime Museum, the Scottish Mining Museum, the Scottish Railway Preservation Society and the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses.
Industrial Museums Scotland has agreed a plan for closer cooperation in their work and for the development of joint projects. All eight hold collections recognised as having National Significance and each is fully accredited.
